Here’s our latest interview with the extremely talented Olivia Ling, who has secured the leading role of Sandy in this years PARTS Musical. Find out if our Sandy is ready to get on her disco pants and unleash her bad girl.

Tell us about yourself.

I’m Olivia Ling, I’m 20 and I study Scriptwriting for film and TV at BU in my third year.

Tell us a bit about your character…

She is the new member of the Pink ladies, she’s pretty naïve, she’s the one everyone falls in love with. A bit dippy, but cute.

Do you think that you relate to your character?

I can in many ways, I think. When I was a kid, every little girl wanted to be Sandy, as she is the main character of the musical. I was a bit under confident as a child, but when you grow up you get a bit more to yourself, whereas Sandy stays vulnerable, and everyone gets a bit vulnerable sometimes.

What did you do for your audition?

I originally auditioned for Rizzo, but when I got the call back I had to sing ‘Hopefully devoted to you’ and act out some dialogue between Sandy and Danny. I also did a bit of “You’re the one I want’ as sexy Sandy.

What is your favourite musical?

I’d say my favourite play at the moment is ‘Blood brothers’, because it’s a little bit different from everything else. It’s not your standard cheesy musical as it’s got some hard gritty acting in there and I quite like that.

Have you got any hidden talents?

It used to be performing, but then I started doing it, so it’s not hidden anymore. I am quite a big swimmer though!

Do you have a dream scriptwriting project?

I am very much a romance person, and I like most films by Richard Curtis, whether he’s writing or directing. It’s cheesy romance and you can’t really get enough of that. For my dissertation I’m doing something along the lines of ‘British Romcom’, but after university I want to go into performing if I can.

Were you in the performance of Beauty and the Beast last year?

I wasn’t in the actual performance last year, but I was the director for PARTS, and I did the off set for the roles. I wasn’t originally the director, at first I was just the music director because of my loud singing voice, which I’m sure everyone will find out about very soon!
